What Is a Cat-Eye Neckline?

A cat-eye neckline curves gently upward at its outer edges rather than dipping down, so the line lifts toward the shoulders. The name is borrowed from cat-eye eyeliner, and the effect is the same one: a lift at the outer corner.
What it does
Two things, and they are the reason it exists.
It frames the décolletage. The upward curve at the outer edges creates a defined frame rather than an open scoop. The chest and collarbone sit inside a shape.

What it needs to work
Internal structure. The shape depends on the outer edges holding their upward curve. If the bodice is not properly supported, the curve flattens and the line disappears — and with it the whole point of the neckline.
Correct fit through the ribcage. A loose bodice lets the neckline lift away from the chest, which breaks the frame.

- Raise your arms and lower them. Does the neckline return to where it was?
- Hug someone. Same test, harder.
- Look straight on and check both sides are level. Bodies are not symmetrical; correcting this is routine alteration work but you want it identified now.
- Look from the side at how the outer edge sits against the chest.
- Lean forward. Check the coverage.
